Akitas - The Largest Japanese Breed

An Akita is also known under the names of Akita or Akita Ken, who is the largest breed of dog from Japan. All dog breeds native Japan are considered the Spitz family. The dogs all share the same conformations as typical Akita, which are square heads, wear facial features, deep almond eyes and the box-shaped body with a very curly tail.

An Akita is between 24-28 inches tall and 60-70 cm at the withers, weigh up to 120 pounds. The Akita is a powerful breed of dog, which has a muscular body, broad chest and deep girth, which is considered one of the largest dog breeds in the world, though not classified as a giant race as Great Dane, St. Bernard and Irish Wolfhounds.

Because all native breeds are classified in the same way, dogs are generally classified into subgroups because of its size. The larger of the two races is the Akita Inu. Medium dogs are called Kai, Shikoku or Ainu. The smallest subgroup of the family is called Shiba, resulting in the direction of "flakes".

The Kai dog means a minimum of 22 inches tall at the withers and weighs about 40-55 pounds. The Shiba Inu is the smallest of all native Japanese breeds of dogs and is about 14-16 ½ inches, with a weight of around 20-23 pounds.

Although the first Akita descendants were much smaller than modern breeds today, dogs were bred for ultimate power. Akita were used mainly for hunting by ancient Japanese Matagi or other hunters. At that time, the race was known as the Matagi Inu and according to historical accounts, the dog was at 20 inches at the withers and weighs about 60 pounds in adulthood. Physical stature dog base is composed of a muscular front torso and the square-shaped body, which was necessary for the task to take down large prey such as wild boars, bears and deer.

In subsequent years, the Akita became bigger and more muscular through the process of selective breeding. The Akita became so revered in Japanese culture that has evolved since everything has been meticulously documented. The strength of the Akita is not fully benefited and is tempered by calm; They have a reputation of standing for too fierce loyalty.

At the end of World War II, American soldiers returning from America brought purebred Akita. The dogs were imported for struggle and were bred with German Shepherds, Rottweilers and mastiffs Bulls to further increase muscle mass and ferocity of the body. Within 20 years of crossbreeding, the Akita has taken a completely different from the traditional look Akita Inu standard.

The American Akita is also known as the Japanese Big Dog, which is much greater than their Japanese ancestry. The evolution of the American Akita has resulted in a complete change of the distance of an Akita Inu. The Akita Inu is known in four standard colors; Red fawn, sesame, brindle and white. The dog may also have white spots on the face, chest, neck, tail and body. American Akita however, can have all the colors and patterns on their coats, some even have a black mask. The American version has lost the appearance of Japanese Akita bears and now has more of a resemblance to a German Shepherd
